All the info on group sessions is just below, this is a digression.
One of the most exciting things about being a climber in the last 10 years has been watching as it emerged from the fringes of sports into a downright popular activity. People like Alex Honnold and Lynn Hill have become genuinely famous and our climbing gyms have evolved from plywood screwed into the walls of old parking garages into state-of-the-art facilities.
All that said, I think I'm allowed one gripe as an old head climber, one "back in the day." For me, that one thing is the climbing gym community. When climbing gyms were smaller they were one big community. Everyone knew everyone else, you'd shout to whoever was working the front desk to put your send song on the que, and you'd all move around the gym climbing and shooting the shit and being a community. I wanna bring that spirit back into the gym, and my hope with our group sessions will do just that
The Crash Matt’s Group Sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 PM at select SF and East bay gyms (Explicit locations and times will be posted here as the season approaches.) They’re a chance for climbers in the league to meet up and climb together, and they work pretty well as a stand-in tripod for logging your sends for the competition. Members warm up at a specific area of the gym at the beginning of every session, sent out over the message boards, and that’s kind of it.
These group climbs are super low commitment with no sign-up or anything, in fact, if you’re reading this and want to come hang out, but aren’t sure about joining the league, you’re so welcome to just show up to a group climb. The idea is that if you’re sitting at home after work and think “Oh shit it’s Tuesday, maybe I’ll get a climb in at the group session tonight,” It’s really up to all of y’all to make it your own, and shape this community into whatever you guys want.
