Crash Matt: Founder and CEO of Crash Matt's Climbing Comps
When I first move to the Bay Area I remember it being pretty hard to get back into climbing. I was a lifelong climber but had taken a few months off when I was moving and when I got out here there was nothing motivating me to get back into it. The community of the climbing gym had always been integral in my life, but in these huge West Coast gyms I found it hard to transition beta talk and short chats into “grab a drink” friendships. The result: my lifelong passion for climbing changed into a monthly routine that felt more like a chore than anything else.
The thing that finally brought me back to climbing was signing up for a small, casual local climbing competition. It wasn’t easy to find one but after some googling I found something a few hours away and It got me in the gym climbing again, unit a few weeks I was back to climbing 3 plus times a week.
I had experience climbing in comps as a kid and knew how fun and casual they were. But I know a lot of climbers, new and old, who would never make the jump from casual climbing sessions signing up for any kind of competition.
That’s when I decided I wanted to create something that motivated climbers to get to the gym and send harder while fostering a tighter-knit climbing gym community. My solution was Crash Matt’s Casual Climbing Comps.
The idea was to add the casual competition of a climbing comp to every gym session, building progress as you climbed more routes. It was also important to me that there were weekly group sessions to climb and work on projects together, building a strong community in the gym. Finally, everyone needed something to compete for, Right now we're settlin for prizes and bragging rights, but hoping to book a finals comp held at a local gym for climbers to qualify for
So that’s the pitch, a super low-stakes, casual competition to keep you motivated in the gym and bring the climbing community together a little more. If you’re into that we’d love to have you!
